Your Cover Letter - Does It Tell The Story? By Sher Matsen, Mon Dec 26th
Let's face it, employers are much smarter than we might thinkthey are. In fact large corporations pay large salaries to theirHR department staff. That's because they are being paid to siftthrough thousands of resumes each year and filter out the onesthat are worth looking at. Corporations are looking to build organizations that are made ofthe right type of staff with the right mental attitude. Thesecorporations recognize that "People are their greatest assets". Your cover letter is your first step in getting the attention ofthose potential corporate employers. Remember the HR departmentsjob is to recruit and hire employees so you need to be able tostand out from the goes a long way in capturing and retainingthe attention of these people whose main job is to recruitpeople and coordinate with the workforce.
A well-written cover letter will engage the recruiter to spendmore time reading the details of your resume. Before you startwriting your cover letter you should write down what the messageis you want to convey on your cover paper. Read it several timesto make sure it sounds right and makes sense. Make sure it'scaptivating and packs the power you want. It should be 400 or500 words that can make the difference. Before you start writing think about these tips: Make sure youkeep your sentences short to ensure your message is clear andconcise. You don't want the recruiter to have to read it overand over because they won't so get to the point. Use simple language and forget the fluff and over emphasis onthe company. Boring! The recruiter already knows everythingthere is to know about "the company" but what they don't knowabout is you. Using a "I look forward to working with ABCIndustries" is okay but that's it! Be sure to
organize the content of your cover letter into smallparagraphs or bulleted points. Do not have more than fourparagraphs in your cover letter. You must also be sure not touse slang or spoken words like "Lookin." Big mistake!! Check both your cover letter and your resume) for spelling orgrammatical errors. That's the quickest way to get yourapplication tossed! Make sure both your resume and your coverletter deliver what the employer wants. A good way to start writing is with the correct greeting phrase. If you know the name of the person you are addressing then youcan start with 'Dear Mr. Brown.' Address it as Hi Jim' and youcan be guaranteed your application will go into file 13. The first paragraph should reference the position they arehiring for or you can put in a separate line such as Re Youradvertisement on Job.com Ref # 1111. Second paragraph should tell why you applied for that positionand reference your skills and how those skills match therequirement but put it in your own words. Avoid mentioningskills you don't have or projects you have never worked on. Ifthere are more achievements you want to include make a bulletedpoints which are easier and quicker to read and comprehend. Your final paragraph should make an impression that stands youout. It should also tell them your resume is attached and thatyou are "looking forward to meeting to further explore thisopportunity." Make sure your address and telephone number arepresent. Then sign it Your Truly with your full name.
